Adventures in SL: day 2 – the abyss, motion sickness & free money

Posted on August 18, 2007

We started out the day where we left off on Day 1 in a tent somewhere. Our plan was to visit my friend’s art gallery and The Abyss exhibit of undersea creatures & exploration.

We dug up the SintixErr Gallery and teleported to find a large mostly vacant gallery with signs that said our conversations would be logged. It’s called Project 0 (zero? Oh?) and you can get a glimpse of some of the conversations at my friend’s chatrecord. I was hoping for more art but this was interesting. There are couches & seats with pose balls (little objects you click on that make your character sit/do different things), a wall that I think logs your chats… Anyway an interesting place and I hope to see some art there in the future.

We then tried to look for “The Abyss” undersea exhibit and ended up on a rather deserted island with a few homes, an ice cream shop and a pose shop. We spent a little “us” time there…

We finally made it to the Blekinge Sculpture Park and I literally fell into a hole that takes you to the exhibit.

The Abyss is a fantastic museum-like area with some history of underwater exploration, environmental awareness and sculptures of undersea life further down. You can get a glimpse of the most fantastic of the deep sea creatures and they’ve even replicated thermal vents and bioluminescent sea cows! This exhibit is only up until August 31st.

Hubs took a few snapshots:

Towards the middle of the undersea exhibit, I found out that I can’t be in SL too long without getting motion sick. Yes, I get nauseous and dizzy walking around Second Life. It’s pitiful, and I think it’s related to Vertigo, but at least I know I’ll never lose myself in the game! That is, unless I feel the need to punish myself for some grievous sin…

We had heard of a place where you can just sit and make Lindens (er… that’s money in SL) called “Welfare Island”. We figured we’d try it out since both our Linden balances were negative 10. Not sure exactly how that one happened since we didn’t spend any at all.

We hopped over to Welfare Island and I was immediately attacked by some freewheeling idiot disguised as Darth Maul. I heard light saber sounds and found myself falling through the air into the depths of the water nearby the island. I got myself back out only to be knocked back in. Fortunately the folks who run the island kicked him off somehow and I was free to take advantage of Uncle Sam/Linden or something like that.

Welfare Island has several ways of making Lindens. You can sit on a ball and earn $3/10 minutes or you can take surveys for more Lindens without much effort. I ended up the night $4 in the red before we logged off for the night.

And of course, we posed with Uncle Sam…

Tonight I think we’ll head over to SL Woodstock to see what the buzz is about, that is – if we’re not too late.
