Sunday Scribblings – Crush

February 17, 2007 3 comments

Quite a few years ago, a band named Stavesacre blew my mind at a concert. They were opening for another band and their debut album hadn’t even come out yet. Impassioned lyrics and the intense music won me over.

Out of that first experience, they became my biggest band-crush of all time. I loved every member, but really lusted after the bass guitar.

That’s right. The bass guitar.

The bass guitarist was playing a Rickenbacker 4003 in jet black. A monster of a bass, so beautiful and just so… aggro. I couldn’t explain it any other way. At the time I played a little electric guitar and never thought about playing bass, but the Rickenbacker haunted my dreams.

I met my now-husband a few years afterwards (turns out his band Rocketboy opened up before Stavesacre that night) and he taught me to play bass. I eventually wanted my own bass so we went shopping at the used instrument shops. I tried Fender P basses, some Peavy crap and a few others… And then I found a Rickenbacker.

Light streamed down and the heavens sang as I stroked the neck and body. It was all white with a pearl pickguard. The chrome… oh my Lord the chrome!

Then I picked it up to plug it in and play a bit.

The thing was HEAVY. TOO heavy. And the fretboard? My poor little hands couldn’t wrap around the fretboard to play. I played a quick riff on there to hear the glorious tone with much difficulty. And the riff sounded like I was playing through a tin can – like I was playing one of those Peaveys through a Peavey amp (and no, I don’t like Peavey).

That, along with the sheer weight and size of the bass killed my crush.

I settled on a fender pbass lyte deluxe with a green metallic finish & gold-plated hardware. Not bad for a first bass.

My husband later bought me an Ernie Ball Musicman Sterling bass for my birthday, and now I can’t imagine what life would be like playing a Ric… my bass!

much more crush-action at Sunday Scribblings.
